Mayrhofen the snowboard capital of the Alps?

There is quite a widespread perception that Mayrhofen is a snowboarders-only destination. We have even been asked if skiers are out numbered in Mayrhofen. There is no doubt that Mayrhofen represents one of the key centres of snowboarding and snowboard developments in the Alps. The Ästhetiker crew made their mark here and there is a huge snowboard community around the Vans Penken Park but to think snowboarding dominates is wrong. There are as many free-skiers in the off-piste and many twin tip riders in the Park. I think where people make the mistake is to think that a young dynamic crowd means snowboarding – it means just that, lots of young people who would rather be in the air than on the snow. Mayrhofen is basically all things progressive and young around the Vans Park. Snowboarding centre of the Alps – maybe? But if you have 2 planks on your feet you are certainly not in the minority.
